Correct Coding – Replacement Cecostomy Tube

A cecostomy is a surgery that makes an opening in the cecum. A non-latex tube or catheter is then placed in cecum in order to give an antegrade enema. An antegrade enema (or “forward enema”) helps empty stool from the colon. It empties from the top part of the large intestine down to the rectum.

The cecostomy tube is changed in the physician office once or twice a year. The replacement tube and accessories/supplies used with the tube are not billable to the Durable Medical Equipment Medicare Administrative Contractors (DME MAC). The correct jurisdiction is the A/B Medicare Administrative Contractors (MAC).
